Stop an Overflowing Toilet Right Now
- 1Close the supply valve behind the toilet. It is the small handle on the wall or floor near the base. Turn it clockwise until it stops and the tank stops refilling.
- 2If the valve is stuck, lift the tank lid and raise the float, or press the flapper down, so no more water drops into the bowl.
- 3Do not flush again. Anything you add has nowhere to go.
- 4Check the other drains. If the tub or shower is backing up too, or the toilet gurgles when you run a sink, the problem is probably the main sewer line, so stop using water everywhere in the house.
- 5Keep people and pets out of the room, and move rugs and anything absorbent off the wet floor.
Is It the Toilet or the Main Line?
An overflowing toilet is either a clog in that toilet or a blockage further down the line that the toilet happens to reveal. Toilets are often the lowest opening in the house, so when the main line backs up, that is where the water shows first.
The difference changes the fix. A single clogged toilet usually clears with a toilet auger. A main line backup needs the line cleared from a cleanout, and if it has backed up before, a camera inspection to see why. Several slow drains at once, gurgling, or sewage odors all point at the main.

When the plumber arrives, the goal is to get the water stopped and the line flowing, then to find out whether this was a one time clog or the sign of something that will come back.
