Does a tankless unit really need annual service?

In South Orange County water, yes. Minerals coat the heat exchanger and steadily cut efficiency until error codes start. Annual descaling keeps the unit at capacity and protects the warranty.

Can any home switch to tankless?

Most can, but gas models often need a larger gas line and different venting, which affects the cost. We assess that up front so there are no surprises.

Do tankless water heaters really never run out of hot water?

They heat water as it flows, so you are not limited by a tank. Sizing still matters. An undersized unit struggles when several fixtures run at once, which is why we size to your home before recommending anything.

How long does a tankless unit last compared to a tank?

A well maintained tankless unit commonly runs 15 to 20 years against 8 to 12 for a tank, which is a large part of why people choose one. The descaling is what earns that lifespan in water as hard as ours.

About Tankless Water Heaters

A tankless water heater heats water as it flows, so a shower does not run cold once a tank empties and you stop paying to keep a full tank hot around the clock. They also free up real space in a garage or utility closet, though they are not the right answer for every house. The work involves sizing the unit to how many fixtures run at once, upgrading the gas line and venting that many conversions require, and annual descaling, which is genuinely necessary in South Orange County hard water because minerals coat the heat exchanger and cut capacity until the unit starts throwing faults. Repairs on existing units cover error codes and temperature swings. Hummel Plumbing handles all of it for homes and businesses in San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, San Clemente, and across South Orange County. Family owned by Jon and Sally Hummel since 2013, license 1034213, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tankless unit only fires once it senses water moving, so there is a short delay before hot water even starts down the line, and then it still has to travel the length of the pipe to you. On a long run to a back bathroom, that shows up as extra seconds at the tap. A recirculation setup, either built into the unit or added to the line, keeps hot water close to the fixture and cuts most of that wait. If one fixture is barely trickling and never goes hot while the rest of the house is fine, that is a flow problem at that fixture rather than a problem with the heater.

Jon was personable and knew exactly what to do to pull a new waterline for our refrigerator up from our crawl space. He was also very informative about differing water pressure throughout our house. It was obvious he took pride in his work. Communication from Sally was excellent. Stellar family team in the neighborhood. Nice to know we can trust them for our plumbing needs.

Jon always does an amazing job! We've used his services for years. He's on time, his prices are fair and his work is reliable. We needed a full house repipe after a pipe burst. I knew exactly who I would call for this big job and who I could trust-Hummel plumbing!

As a retired plumbing contractor, I'd like to think that I can tell a good plumber, hard worker, and honest man after watching him work. I'm getting a little long in the tooth (and sore in the back) to do much of my own plumbing anymore and I call Jon when I need plumbing help. I have also referred him to my neighbors, who report that they have been very happy with him.

We've used Jon with Hummel Plumbing a few times now here in San Clemente, and he's been great every single time. He previously installed our tankless water heater, and most recently fixed our outdoor shower and handled a few other items for us. Everything has always been done correctly the first time—no shortcuts. He's friendly, thorough, and clearly takes pride in doing things the right way. He was also able to come out quickly, which we really appreciated. It's honestly such a relief to have a plumber we trust. Highly recommend Jon and Hummel Plumbing!
