A softener or whole house filter goes where the main line enters the house, usually the garage wall or just outside it, because that is the only place that treats every tap. A softener also needs a drain for its regeneration cycle and an outlet nearby, and those two requirements usually decide the exact spot more than anything else. Reverse osmosis is the exception and lives under the kitchen sink with its own small tank. We walk the location with you before anything gets cut, and the water is off at the main only while we make the connection.
