How long does a water heater last?

Most tank water heaters around South Orange County last 8 to 12 years, and our hard water is what shortens that. Annual flushing stretches the life. Past the ten year mark, replacement is often the better spend.

Should I repair or replace mine?

Under about eight years old, repair is usually worth it. Past ten, the tank itself is the failing part and replacement is normally the better spend. We will tell you plainly which side of that line you are on.

What size water heater does my home need?

It depends on people and habits, not just square footage. A family running two showers and a laundry load in the same hour needs different capacity than a couple. We size the unit to how you actually use hot water.

Can you replace a water heater the same day it fails?

Often yes, and we are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call with the model and where it sits in the house and we will tell you what we can do.

What should I do before you arrive if my water heater is leaking?

Shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank by turning it clockwise until it stops. If the heater runs on gas, turn the gas control dial to off, and if it is electric, switch off the breaker labeled for the water heater. Move anything stored nearby up off the floor and otherwise leave the tank alone, because a full tank is heavy and the water inside it is hot enough to scald.

About Water Heaters

When the tank in your garage or closet stops making hot water, starts leaking, or knocks while it runs, the real question is whether the water heater is worth repairing or it is time to replace. Hummel Plumbing handles both for homes and businesses in San Juan Capistrano and across South Orange County, including Dana Point, San Clemente, and Mission Viejo. The work means checking the unit's age and condition, testing the thermostat, burner or element, gas valve, and relief valve, flushing the mineral sediment out of the tank, and when the tank itself is the failed part, pulling it and installing a new one to current code with a permit, seismic strapping, and proper venting. Orange County water is hard, and that sediment is what shortens a tank's life here, so annual flushing is worth doing. Jon and Sally Hummel have run the company since 2013, California license 1034213, bonded and insured, open 24 hours.

Jon was personable and knew exactly what to do to pull a new waterline for our refrigerator up from our crawl space. He was also very informative about differing water pressure throughout our house. It was obvious he took pride in his work. Communication from Sally was excellent. Stellar family team in the neighborhood. Nice to know we can trust them for our plumbing needs.

Jon always does an amazing job! We've used his services for years. He's on time, his prices are fair and his work is reliable. We needed a full house repipe after a pipe burst. I knew exactly who I would call for this big job and who I could trust-Hummel plumbing!

As a retired plumbing contractor, I'd like to think that I can tell a good plumber, hard worker, and honest man after watching him work. I'm getting a little long in the tooth (and sore in the back) to do much of my own plumbing anymore and I call Jon when I need plumbing help. I have also referred him to my neighbors, who report that they have been very happy with him.

We've used Jon with Hummel Plumbing a few times now here in San Clemente, and he's been great every single time. He previously installed our tankless water heater, and most recently fixed our outdoor shower and handled a few other items for us. Everything has always been done correctly the first time—no shortcuts. He's friendly, thorough, and clearly takes pride in doing things the right way. He was also able to come out quickly, which we really appreciated. It's honestly such a relief to have a plumber we trust. Highly recommend Jon and Hummel Plumbing!
